The Dreame D9 features the brand new 3.0 LDS Laser System which has incredible sensibility. It can scan as many as 2,080 points per second to thoroughly map your space. Dreame D9 Robot Vacuum Review
August 30, 2021
The Dreame D9 is a great little vacuum with some features well worth your consideration. It offers better control than many vacuums in its class with features like no-go zones and virtual walls. It can also vacuum better on carpet than the vast majority of comparable vacuums and has a large dustbin that can keep it going without emptying for a long time.
Here's what you need to know about why the Dreame D9 may be the ideal vacuum for your needs as well as some shortcomings to consider.
- Runs on a 3.0 LDS Laser System, so it may be able to map your home better than some competition
- Big dustbin of 570ml means that you won't have to empty it as often
- Very impressive 150 minute run time is longer than most other robot vacuums, giving it time to clean more space before it needs to charge
- Offers invisible walls and no-go zones to give you a lot of control over where your vacuum ends up
- Mopping function with 270 mL of water
- Adds pressure automatically on carpets for greater vacuuming efficiency and has better carpet vacuuming performance than most other vacuums in this class
- Can't save maps, so if you have more than one story in your home it will need to remap each floor each time
- Can't use cleaners or detergents in the mop
The Dreame D9 runs on a 3.0 LDS Laser System, a LIDAR System which offers some significant advantages over other types of navigation. Perhaps the most noticeable value of this navigation system is that it doesn't need light to run, like many other robot vacuums.
The Dreame D9 could run even in pitch-black conditions, which is convenient if you'd like to run the vacuum in the evening while you're sleeping. Furthermore, this navigation system is extremely accurate, able to scan at 2080 points per second. It can move through even the most complex array of rooms easily.
The Dreame D9 is very good at avoiding furniture and debris in the room, so if you want a vacuum that you can feel confident won't scuff the furniture, this may be a good option for you to consider.
The Dreame D9 can give you a lot of control over its functioning using the app. It will trace out your entire home in real-time so that you can see your home the way the vacuum sees it. Unfortunately, you won't be able to save this highly detailed map if you put it on another floor, which makes this robot a less than ideal choice for multi-story homes.
You can name the rooms according to preset names that are provided so that you can tell it to clean individual rooms if you like. You can also clean by individual area if you prefer.
Set no-go zones and no-mop zones, which gives you a lot of control over this vacuum’s function. You can also set invisible walls as straight or diagonal lines to keep the vacuum from going past the barrier.
Schedule as many runs a day as you like using this vacuum. This is a good way to make up for the fact that it only makes two passes in a run. If you like, you can schedule the vacuum to run multiple times during an evening so you'll wake up to a sparkling clean house. Since the vacuum will recharge and then start again wherever it left off, you can feel confident that it will charge itself as much as needed to get the job done.
You can also see the vacuum cleaning history and a service schedule from the app, enabling you to keep track of what your vacuum has been up to and when it needs maintenance.
The Dreame D9 offers 3000Pa of suction, which is a good amount for cleaning most home. It picks up around 96% of most debris on hard floors.
The Dreame D9 can automatically detect carpet and increases suction when it finds it. This is a very convenient feature since it enables you to set the vacuum at a relatively low suction power and still rely on it to increase suction when it gets to a carpet.
It tends to function even better on carpet than it does on hardwood, which makes it a superb vacuum if you have a lot of carpeting in your home. It picks up as much as 100% of some debris on carpet.
Unfortunately, it only picks up around 86% of the debris that tends to rub into the carpet. It does nearly as well on medium pile carpeting as it does on low pile.
Regrettably, this vacuum isn't as great at untangling hair as you may hope. It leaves a fair amount of hair tangled in the brush after picking it up, which means detangling hair from the brush will be a regular part of your maintenance.
270 mL of water is plenty to keep the mop pad damp throughout an entire cleaning cycle. This robot does a great job of distributing just the right amount of water to keep the mop damp and effective but not so much that the floor is sopping.
While you can't add detergents to the mop compartment, this robot still does a good job of eliminating stains and marks. It can clean up even dried stains with relative ease and doesn't leave any tire tracks or water marks, so you'll be left with sparkling floors.
The Dreame D9 is very quiet. On its lowest setting, in fact, it won't even interrupt your conversation. This level isn't powerful enough to pick up most debris on hard floors and carpets, but it is enough to pick up daily dust and it works well for the mopping feature.
The entire point of choosing a robot vacuum is to reduce the amount of time and effort you put into keeping your home clean. Naturally, you don't want to have to clean the vacuum a lot in order to let it do its job. The Dreame D9 isn't extremely difficult to maintain, but there are some regular tasks that need to be completed:
Empty the Dustbin
At 570 ml, the dustbin is large enough that you won't have to empty it every time you run the vacuum unless there is an unusual amount of debris to pick up. However, it is important to empty it before it is overpacked, which will lead to insufficient performance and can cause issues with the functioning of the vacuum. Once a week is generally sufficient for most households.
Clean the Brushes
The Dreame D9 has two brushes which you’ll need to clean regularly. The primary brush needs to be cleaned fairly often, generally every other time or every three times that you empty the dustbin. It can accumulate debris and dust, and is particularly likely to have hair wrapped in it. It isn't difficult to clean this brush simply by raking and shaking debris off of it.
The side brush is easy to detach and may not need to be cleaned quite as often as the main brush. The most common problem is hair wrapped around the base which can eventually impede spinning.
Clean the Filter
How often the filter needs to be cleaned depends on how busy your vacuum is. It's a good idea to check it periodically when you first start using the vacuum to determine just how often it will need to be cleaned.
The HEPA filter that comes with the Dreame D9 is washable and isn't a challenge to keep clean. It's a good idea to tap it lightly on something solid to get any debris off of it and then use a handheld vacuum to suction stuck-on stuff off of it. You can also wash it with gentle soap and warm water.
Wipe Down the Body of the Vacuum
Periodically wipe down the entire body of the vacuum with a microfiber towel. Be especially careful to wipe the sensors underneath so that they will continue to map your space effectively. You can also wipe down the underside of the vacuum and wheels so that they continue to spin properly.
Enjoy the Dreame D9
This vacuum offers a lot of value at a very reasonable price. If you want a vacuum that performs extremely well on carpet, offers a great mopping function, and has a number of convenient features, this may well be the machine for you to consider.
